I have camped at this lake every summer for the past 8 years, this campgroung is one of the cleanest sites we have ever visited, as for the condition of the lake welcome to Alberta, with low lake levels all over Alberta, it is only common sence all the lakes are in the same boat. Enjoy this park greatly and cannot wait for the weather to get nicer.

I like the facilities, the sites (for RV's, not tents), the store, the walking trails, the views, and the fun. The beach is great, the playground facilities were good until the one was removed. There is still one at the main beach. The lake has been low the last couple of years, rendering the boat launch useless, and swimming and so on has also suffered, so depends on what you hope to get out of the camping experience. Over all, I like the treed sites, showers, walking trails, and horseshoe pits, and will definitely go back again and again!

I too grew up around the Barrhead area and still love Thunder Lake. I have talked to some people and it appears that the lake actually maintains a pretty solid level. the problem in the past was kids messing with the dam and lowering the level to near critical lows which just don't recover. I stayed there in Sept after the long weekend with my wife. It was empty, beautiful and everything i remembered. The lake is now controlled by a poured dam so it cannot be "dumped" so i am hoping for good things to happen. When the lake is good, it's good but when it's bad.....yuck. the campground is definitely not as it was when run by the government, but are any of them really?

The lake sucks for swimming however the campground is very nice. Private spaces with loads of trees. There are a lot of spaces and the campground appears to be nearly full. This is a beautiful campground, it is just the lake that is full of algae and leaches. I would definitely go back.

It was okay, but I have been in better campgrounds. I am really disappointed with the condition of the showers, had to fight with the machines to take your loonie and the amount of water coming out of the showers was pathetic. The shower curtains were disgusting. Our campsite was great except they don't look out for dead branches and so we had to remove a large one and then a couple fell and went through our screened tent. The boards on the stairs for the trails are rotting and need replacing. I have been to better and certainly have been to worse.

It has been awhile since I stayed at thunder lake, when we stayed there it was a real Provincial Park and was maintained very well, since they now have someone privately running it, it has absolutely nothing except the park to enjoy. They took away the paddle boats and the concession by the water etc. We were actually thinking of going there but now I am not so sure.

I will not be camping here again, we were not given the campsites we reserved. The lake was full of algae and leaches, and because of the winter kill and algae blooms the fishing was poor. They do not monitor the noise level in the campground, making it very unenjoyable for everyone respecting the 11:00pm quiet time policy. I do have to say though that the facilities were very clean and maintained.

I grew up going to Thunder Lake every weekend and was very disappointed going back as an adult. The lake was very dirty, full of algae and blood suckers. Security has replaced all freedom to laugh and talk by the campfire. 5 adults were simply talking and enjoying the fire around 10 pm when security told us we were too loud and continued to drive by every 5 minutes on a continuous loop by our site all night and returned the next night as well. I do appreciate the need for security, however this was over kill. We camp out almost every weekend and have never encountered such strict noise regulations. Sites are not tent friendly, the ground is totally packed gravel good for trailers and RV's however tent posts do not stick in ground, all metal posts bent when attempting to hammer in. Washrooms were clean and well supplied but very full and very smelly.

I was there from June 30th-July 5th. I will NEVER go back to this campground. We were not given the sites we had booked a month in advance. We were given a site that barely accomodated our tent and that of our children. The ground is pure gravel and nearly impossible to pitch a tent. They pack people in like sardines. This is clearly a site that is about making money and not about the campers experience. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone and I will NEVER camp there again. You couldn't pay me to ever deal with the people there again. Truly a terrible experience. I can find many other campgrounds to give my money to. Thunder Lake...is a poorly, rudely ran campground.
