My family and I took a whirlwind RV trip this summer through southcentral Alaska and continued to stay at gravel-roaded, wide open campgrounds near our destinations that kind of felt sterile, as they were trying to CREATE a camping atmosphere, and we couldn't even have a campfire at many. Our last night, we pulled into Tolsona Wilderness Campground (which I'd made reservations at a month prior to our trip), and the fam started cheering! "Now THIS is camping!" "This is perfect." "What a great place!" they said. The campground owners were incredibly nice, the bathrooms and showers were neat, tidy, and clean, the showers only cost a quarter for 5 minutes, and it even has WI-FI! My 3-year-old nephew had a ball throwing rocks into the creek on our lot, and we even had a "treasure hunt" for him, since he's really into pirates right now. We made a campfire and roasted hotdogs and marshmallow - just like campers should! What a great way to end our trip - we all agreed. I've already made mental plans to re-visit next time I'm in Alaska. It's a must see.
