Lava Beds National Monument 1 Review
Edit/Fix
1 Indian Well
Tulelake, CA 96134
Description : This volcanic field erupted from the Medicine Lake volcano less than 100,000 years ago, with eruptions ending about 1100 years ago. Human habitation of this area is evidenced by ancient petroglyphs carved at Symbol Bridge and Petroglyph Point. Later, the Modoc took refuge here during 1872-1873. The conflict is remembered at the Thomas-Wright Battlefield, Gillems Camp, Canby's Cross, and Captain Jack's Stronghold. Geologic features include chimineys, an ice cave, and a fascinating trail through the caldera, Mammoth Crater. The lava fields offer a wider variety of volcanic phenomena than in Hawaii or Idaho, particularly the recent rhyolite flows.
