As you travel south down the beautiful Seward Highway Scenic Byway, don't forget to look for whales in Turnagain Arm, or up in the mountains as Dall sheep and mountain goat roam. We are about 50 miles from Anchorage,to Portage Glacier road only one way to turn (east) and only 1.7 miles down the road on your right. If you continue down Portage Glacier Road it has a number of scenic pullouts. These include Moose Flats, Alder Pond and the Explorer Glacier Viewpoint. There's a fish-viewing platform on Williwaw Creek, right near the visitor center, where eagles, gulls, dipper and ducks can be seen, along with salmon. You will want to visit the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center, as well, at the end of the road.
If you're headed to Whittier we're only 6 easy miles to the tunnel. If Seward is your destination, 70 miles is less than 1 1/2 hour away, Kenai just over 2 hours away. |
