Towing with a dolly

TOW DOLLY

tow-dollyA tow dolly is a 2 wheeled trailer the your tow vehicle is strapped to. This allows you to tow your vehicle with two wheels on the pavement and two wheels on the dolly. This method is particularly useful with front-wheel drive vehicles. You can potentially prevent unnecessary miles from accumulating on your tow vehicle. Consider the following when choosing a tow dolly :

  • Weight – A tow dolly can weigh as little as 500 pounds and as much as 1500 pounds. When you combine the weight of your vehicle and the tow dolly, you end up dragging a lot of extra weight around
  • Reverse – It is very difficult to back-up a motorhome with a tow dolly attached. You may get into situations where you’ll need to back-up however, I would recommend detaching the dolly prior to going backwards.
  • Modifications – No modifications are required to the coach or toad. A trailer hitch and wiring on the motorhome is all that is required.
  • Convenience – Once you get to your destination, you’ll need to detach your tow vehicle from the dolly, then store your dolly out of the way. Since these dollies are not lightweight, it will usually take two people to relocate the dolly.
  • Tires – You’ll need to make sure you have a spare tire for the dolly along with the correct wheel wrench and jack. If you get a flat tire on the dolly without these, you’ll need to unhook.
